The James Ryan Mannequin was developed to illustrate
the role of the Fish Merchant in outport Newfoundland. The merchant provided
a vital link between the producers of a product (salt cod) and the consumers
of that product. As well, the goods sold in his shop enabled the fishing
families to survive in the outports. The mannequin is based upon historic
photos and information about James Ryan, the original owner of the
Ryan Premises.
